About Yama-dera temple (Risshaku-ji temple)
Risshaku-ji was built on the top of the mountain about 1,200 years ago. It is listed in a nationally-designated important cultural property as the oldest beech wooden structure.
It is said that one desire disappears in each climb of 108 steps that will purify your body. Thereafter, another 907 steps will be waiting for you! The total climb is 1,015 steps and will take about 30 minutes. You will then reach the top of the mountain where you can admire the beautiful view. The temple and the town’s view from the mountaintop is just magnificent.
Due to a religious belief in this area, people carved a stone monument to a rock wall of the mountain for a memorial service. That’s why you can find some hollows on the rock wall. However, there is the special hollow called ‘midahora.’ It is said that happiness will come for you when you see the hollow like a shape of Buddha.
